Hardy annuals are a group of plants that benefit from an extended cool establishment period. These plants can either be fall sown or fall planted. These plants can withstand light frosts or even freezes in some cases without damage, hence "hardy annuals". When they are able to do their rooting out in cool soil, the plants produce taller stems and more abundant harvests than if the plants were planted after the last frost date. Use the natural preferences of these plants to achieve more high quality stems.

Growers in northern climates (Zone 5b and colder) will need to provide protection for the plants in order to overwinter them where winters are extremely cold, such as planting in a greenhouse. Growers in warmer zones can mulch heavily, or cover with frost cloth for the coldest part of their winter. 

Yarrow is a hardy perennial in Zones 3-9. It is very drought tolerant once established, and blooms profusely in the summer months. Plant in full sun.
