Bare Root - Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red' (10 ct)

Also known as Winterberry, Ilex is a deciduous shrub prized for its beautiful berries in fall, and a staple ingredient in holiday planters and wreaths. Left on the plant, berries will provide fall and early winter interest, and serve as a food source for songbirds. Ilex is very tolerant of wet soils and swampy conditions.

Ilex is dioecious, so plants can either be male or female. Winter Red is female, and it is recommended to plant one male plant for every 10 female plants in order to achieve the proper pollination required for the female plants to set berries. Each order of Ilex bare roots will include 9 'Winter Red' females and 1 'Southern Gentleman' male plant for this reason.  

Plant in full sun to part shade. Matures to 8 feet tall by 8 feet wide. Hardy in Zones 3-9.
